Race for a Reason is a movement inspired by a friendship.
This is my friend Angel McDaniel. Angel and I met in the summer of 2007 as Unified Partners in Special Olympics. The first sport we competed in was bocce. I had never played bocce and Angel helped me to understand the game. We traveled to the State Special Olympics competition and did great. Most importantly, we became great friends.
Over the years, Angel and I have competed together many times in bocce and bowling. We’ve traveled many miles together and had a ton of fun. Recently, Angel had her right leg amputated above the knee. She’s had a really tough time recovering over the past few months. I had this idea to train for a race in honor of my friend Angel. She’s been a great coach over the years and I wanted to have her support in my latest endeavor.
Our dream was accomplished on a dark and rainy Sunday morning in March 2015 at the Publix Marathon 5k. My husband James and I had the opportunity to run with Angel as part of the Kyle Pease Foundation. In spite of the damp weather, we were all thrilled to meet our goals! It was one of the most fun and inspiring events I’ve ever been a part of.
We all raced together and we all earned medals. We were a great team!
So, Race for a Reason was born. I want other people to be able to experience the same friendship, inspiration and encouragement that Angel and I have.
